Boothbay Region YMCA
Boothbay Harbor, Maine | 24,000 SF addition
We are currently developing a new natatorium with this existing YMCA, including new locker rooms, fitness and aerobic studios, and member support spaces. The project developed after a multi-year assessment of their existing pool facilities and analysis of what programs and amenities were needed to help the YMCA reach its membership goals. One consideration in their discussions included a wave generator, providing pool party and indoor play features – more significantly the generator would allow the growth of open-water swimming, survival, rescue, and kayaking programs, which in turn could introduce the YMCA to the surprisingly high percentage of the region’s commercial fishery that does not know how to swim. Opportunities for US Coast Guard involvement, potential grants, and leased pool time quickly begin to offset the initial cost of the generator. This project included review with the State of Maine as a pilot program for chlorine alternatives in public pool sanitization; the resulting pool filtration system incorporates a enhanced filters and ultraviolet disinfection.
