Community Hall

Merriconeag Waldorf School | Freeport, Maine | 51,000 SF

Designed to foster an embracing and creative environment where first through eighth graders will discover, theater, music and movement, the Community Hall joins the cultural and artistic pursuits of this growing Waldorf school community.

Movement and color redefine the character of the Hall, as if by a change of costume.  By morning, as the students practice their tragic Greek drama, the space may be stark and filled with awakening light.  At noon the space may be filled by the moving color of Eurythmy, as the art of balance, sound and unity is explored.  By night, the glow of the Hall will welcome parents with abundant space for socializing and comfortable seating for a presentation of ‘The Beeswax Conspiracy’.

Flexible meeting and event spaces provide a variety of spatial scales for daily school meetings, parent-teacher conferences, lectures, dances, fund raisers and social events.  The shaped plan arrangement of the Hall ensures appropriate acoustic environments for groups of 5 – 250, with surrounding volumes housing galleries, a community kitchen, washroom spaces and backstage facilities.
