Portland Public Market

Portland, Maine | 37,000 SF

Developed as a bequest to the City from the late philanthropist Betty Noyes, the Public Market creates a landmark civic destination in downtown Portland and an anchor for the revitalization of the surrounding Bayside neighborhood. The 37,000 square foot project supports 30 vendor stalls within the open market hall, two restaurants, a public demonstration kitchen and offices under on of the largest timber frame roofs in New England. Kitchens and storages are organized under a single-story volume paralleling the two-story hall, with each support space individually serviced and metered.

The building fronts three streets with a continuous storefront pattern connecting the market hall to sidewalks through coordinated signage and material detailing. Streetscape components were developed in collaboration with the City to unify the area and create a visual mapping from nearby Monument Square and its weekly farmers’ market. Corner entrances follow the local historic commercial pattern with broad steps and ramps negotiating the steeply sloping site and opening onto exterior plaza spaces.
